Tips for Making Your Air Conditioners Summer Ready

Air conditioners need to be ready before the summer. Hence, the best time to check would be in springtime. Start at least 15 days before you actually need the air conditioner. Start by turning on the power and checking the cooling efficiency.

For spring, the cooling should happen within few minutes for a small room. Check for any unusual noise, water leakage and temperature gradient problems. If the cooling is fine and you see no other visual problems, the A/C might just be working fine.

Nevertheless, to do a more accurate check, you can schedule your annual maintenance by hiring a air conditioning services during spring. On the other hand, you can do a check yourself by following a simple check up procedure.

Air conditioners do two things. Provide temperature controlled air and give filtered air. Temperature is controlled by thermostat. If the placement of the thermostat is not at the right place, it may record the wrong temperature and star adjusting the temperature of the air falsely.

Thermostat should be placed near the heat generating bodies. If these bodies are cool, then the thermostat will not over work to make the temperature cooler.

The second purpose is served by filters. These gather massive amounts of dirt and filth during the filtration process. Places prone to dust and high levels of pollution will result very dirty filters and hence may require frequent cleaning.

If you decide to skip cleaning, think again. Your bulky electricity bills might be an indirect result of dirty filters, as the air conditioner has to work overtime and consume more energy to be efficient. Another drawback of dirty filter would be recirculation of the same dust within the work and living spaces. This can clog ducts and pave way for secondary mould and algae growth. Health hazards too are not far away.

After you clean the filters, the focus should next shift to condenser unit. This is the part of the air conditioning system that exchanges the hot air and sends in cooled fresh air. Blockage in the pipes leading to the condenser will lead to leakage of water. This unit also has a fan. This fan cools the air. If there are, debris collected in this area, these need to be cleaned with wet cloth.

Do not hose as it may cause short-circuiting. Wipe the fins of the fans and let them air dry before turning the power on. Low vacuum would be the best way to clear debris and dirt.

Check for friction and loose screws. These may cause noise and unwanted wear and tear of mechanical parts. Overhaul friction prone parts with good quality lubricant.

After all these initial air conditioning maintenance procedure, your air conditioner is all set to go all the way through the summer.
